Hospital is cited for staff issue
The national organization charged with accrediting hospitals issued citations against the G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center for personnel shortages.
The citations came after an April 26 inspection of the laboratory and radiology departments. The laboratory department is down 14 people, and the radiology department is short two radiologists and two technicians in comparison to staffing a few years ago, according to current and former employees.
"The Joint Commission specifically reviewed staffing levels and determined there was no risk to patient safety," according to the statement.
On Aug. 10, a lawsuit alleging a staffing shortage ended in a judgment against the Jackson VA.
A U.S. District Court jury in Jackson concluded radiologists Dr. Margaret Hatten, Dr. Bridghid McIntire and Dr. Linda Finnegan, who had complained about inadequate staffing at the VA, were all due pay back from the Jackson VA. The jury found the VA guilty of gender discrimination, racial discrimination and a hostile work environment.
The three testified during the trial that a shortage of radiologists had led to a serious backlog. They also testified radiologists began to be rewarded for high numbers of films read.
