10 Reasons to Avoid GMOs

Opinion of AO Legacy: There should be 11 reasons to avoid GMOs. The first reason to avoid GMOs should be: because they are produced by Monsanto the largest producer of agent orange during the Vietnam war. Find the rest of the reasons below. Just follow the link at the end of this post labeled: the source to learn more.

1. GMOs are unhealthy.
2. GMOs contaminate―forever.
3. GMOs increase herbicide use.
4. Genetic engineering creates dangerous side effects.
5. Government oversight is dangerously lax.
6. The biotech industry uses “tobacco science” to claim product safety.
7. Independent research and reporting is attacked and suppressed.
8. GMOs harm the environment.
9. GMOs do not increase yields, and work against feeding a hungry world.
10. By avoiding GMOs, you contribute to the coming tipping point of consumer rejection, forcing them out of our food supply.

Please choose healthier non-GMO brands, tell others about GMOs so they can do the same, and join the Non-GMO Tipping Point Network. Together we can quickly reclaim a non-GMO food supply.

Monsanto: GMOs - Is GMO Corn a Threat to Fish?

Sure, there might be potential benefits to these kinds of manipulations, but we need to do a far better job of understanding their impact before turning them loose on the only planet we have.

Here is a case in point. Scientists at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, publishing in the National Academies of the Sciences found maize detritus in 86% of stream sites surveyed. Of these 23% had proteins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt corn) in their water column. All of these sites had Bt corn planted within 500 meters. The Bt protein, which is closely related to B. anthracis, the agent behind anthrax, is highly toxic to a number of insect species, beyond the specific caterpillars against which it was targeted. Among these, are the chironomidae, or non-biting midges, commonly known as lake flies.
These insects are important food for fish such as trout and sturgeon as well as insectivorous birds such as swallows and martins. In fact, many of the fishing flies that anglers use are fashioned in imitation of these little guys. Earlier studies have suggested that Bt corn might also harm the caddis fly, another important fish food.
We develop a new technology that supposedly produces more corn, but we end up with less fish.

Monsanto: GMOs - Who will feed the starving masses?

We’re seeing the biggest pro-GMO effort yet, to move us to a technology-based, corporately controlled, and manipulated food system.

Not only are genetically engineered crops failing to deliver on the promise of increased yield, the millions of gallons of herbicide tilled into the soil before planting and sprayed on crops after they have sprouted is causing damage to the soil itself and draining into waterways and leeching into water tables.

Clearly, “[in] order to address the roots of hunger today and build a food system that will feed the future, we must invest in ‘sustainable intensification’ – not expensive GMO technology that threatens biodiversity and locks us into dependence on fossil fuels, fossil water, and agrochemicals.”

Monsanto & GMOs: U.S. Government Allowing GMOs: Genetically Engineered Crops on Wildlife Refuges

The U.S. government has been allowing the planting of genetically engineered (GE) crops on over 50 National Wildlife refuges throughout the country, allegedly to help promote the exporting of GE crops, according to an investigation of emails obtained by an environmental ‘watchdog’ group.

But now comes news via a recent Truthout.org investigation of government emails between administration officials and agribusiness industry executives, concerning the on-going planting of GE crops in over 50 wild life refuges throughout the U.S.
The rationale for this effort — as described in the emails – is “habitat restoration” where Roundup ready crops are planted so as to survive the spraying of Roundup on invasive weeds, and thus maintain and/or rebuild vegetation cover, presumably.

MONSANTO: New Guidance Allows Nations to Label Genetically Engineered Foods

The Source

The Codex Alimentarius Commission, which is composed of food safety regulators from more than 100 countries, adopted a guidance document during its annual summit in Geneva, Switzerland, on Tuesday that prevents any country's GE food labeling policies from being legally challenged as barriers to trade.

The guidance does not mandate the labeling of GE foods, but allows countries to develop their own labeling policies.

The US delegation to the Codex Commission reportedly reversed its position on the guidance document, allowing for the commission to reach consensus after 20 years of debate, according to Consumers International.

Other countries, however, are eager to regulate food crops genetically engineered by agribusiness companies like Monsanto, Syngenta and BASF.

Monsanto & Understanding GMOs: The Non-GMO Project Product Verification Program is Up and Running

The Non-GMO Project Product Verification Program is Up and Running

The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit originally formed by retailers whose customers were concerned about foods containing GMO ingredients. There are estimates that up to 70% of processed foods on store shelves contain ingredients from genetically engineered crops.

According to Jeffrey Smith, the author of Seeds of Deception, “Many consumers in the US mistakenly believe that the FDA approves GM foods through rigorous, in-depth, long-term studies. In reality, the agency has absolutely no safety testing requirements. Instead the agency relies on research from companies like Monsanto, research that is meticulously designed to avoid finding problems.

It’s easy to understand the FDA’s industry-friendly policy on regulation of GMOs when you see the revolving door between agency regulators and the companies they regulate. The FDA has claimed it was not aware of any information showing that GM crops were different ‘in any meaningful or uniform way’ from non-GMO crops and therefore didn’t require testing.

But 44,000 internal FDA documents made public by a lawsuit show that was a complete lie. The overwhelming consensus among the FDA’s own scientists was that GM food was quite different and could lead to unpredictable and hard-to-detect allergens, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems.

It turns out that FDA scientists who had urged superiors to require long-term studies were ignored.”

The consumption of certified organic food—the only way now known to avoid GMO-consumption—has become increasingly important for practitioners and their patients with allergies, asthma, learning and behavior disorders, chemical sensitivities, cancer, and toxic body burden.

It appears that thanks to the FDA’s less-than-optimal regulation of genetically modified food, the American public is “the experiment.” It’s time to completely reform the FDA, a thorough overhaul of every part of the FDA.
The purpose www.ReformFDA.org is to persuade the American public and Congress that a total reform of the FDA is absolutely necessary.

Monsanto: Soy not always as healthy as it might sound

Soy not always as healthy as it might sound

"Many of soy's health benefits have been linked to isoflavones - plant compounds that mimic estrogen," reports Lindsey Konkel in Environmental Health News. "But animal studies suggest that eating large amounts of those estrogenic compounds might reduce fertility in women, trigger premature puberty and disrupt development of fetuses and children."

Also at issue is that upward of 90 percent of the U.S. soybean crop is grown using genetically modified seeds sold by Monsanto. These have been engineered to withstand repeated dousing with the herbicide glyphosate (also sold by Monsanto and marketed as RoundUp). According to the nonprofit Non GMO Project, this allows soybean farmers to repeatedly spray their fields with RoundUp to kill all weeds (and other nearby plant life) except for the soybean plants they are growing.

As It Stands: Food conspiracy of government and chemical companies grows every year

As It Stands: Food conspiracy of government and chemical companies grows every year

Talk about selling the people out.

The Food Safety Modernization Act (S510) basically, the act precludes the public's right to grow, own, trade, transport, share, feed and eat each and every food that nature makes.

Something to keep in mind: when ideological opposites unite on the same issue, such as the safety of our food chain, it's no longer about politics. It's about survival.

Instead of watching out for us, they are poisoning our food supply for profit.

MONSANTO: GMOs - Applying The Precautionary Principle

Applying The Precautionary Principle

Afterward, the professor asked me if I was aware of the precautionary principle, which is a scientific term that means something has to be proven safe before it can be unleashed, as opposed to proven dangerous after it has been unleashed (which is the standard in America today).

Like I said in my book, GMOs are inside our food. We can’t wash them off or peel them away. And now it seems they’re in our blood, too.

And I was sadly reminded of this when I read a recent report that women and infants who were tested in Canada have the toxin Bt—a GMO toxin—in their BLOOD because they have eaten “cheap” GMO-laden foods.

Obama Deregulates GMO Crops Despite Supreme Court Injunction

Obama Deregulates GMO Crops Despite Supreme Court Injunction

MONSANTO: You'll have to do more to avoid GMOs than what this article suggests

Is It Bad For Us To Be Eating Genetically Modified Foods?

Holy crap — I've been eating genetically modified food. Where? In the sugar in my morning coffee. In the canola oil I cook with. And in the good old inexpensive American beer we've resorted to in wallet-pinching times.

There is growing evidence of GM food being harmful, says Smith, who points to increased allergies in humans, as well as liver, immune, and reproductive problems in laboratory animals, and examples of death and sterility in farm animals fed GM corn. There's another example of the insidiousness of GM food — it has entered our food supply as animal feed. Yet farmers report that animals will avoid GM when given a choice, says Smith.

But Smith offers a hopeful message. He believes that just 5 percent of consumers can create a tipping point to stop food manufacturers from using GM food. “There are no consumer benefits,” he says. What can you do to avoid GM foods? Look for products carrying the GMO-free label. Avoid soy, corn and cotton and canola oils — above 90 percent of all these crops are GM. Choose cane sugar or local, organically raised honey. Beware also of GM Hawaiian papaya and some zucchini and yellow crookneck squash. For more info, go to http://action.responsibletechnology.org.

MONSANTO: Children of the Corn: GMOs Don't Qualify As Food

*AO Legacy posts as many articles is as possible because we believe in free speech. This does not mean, however, Agent Orange Legacy necessarily shares the opinion of these same authors.

Children of the Corn: GMOs Don't Qualify As Food

Hein explained that they had taken antibodies from women with a rare condition known as immune infertility, isolated the genes that regulated the manufacture of those infertility antibodies, and, using genetic engineering techniques, had inserted the genes into ordinary corn seeds used to produce corn plants.

Isn't keeping GMOs unlabeled a virtual form of mandating them, since that lack of information leaves a population prey to them? Does a population have a right to sue the government based on such forced exposure? ? Is there any connection between a current raw milk lawsuit in which the FDA claims the public has no right to choose its food or any right to its health, and the government/corporations creating an additional means of trapping the public into consuming GMOs?

Meanwhile, GE-corn, GE-soy, GE-cotton seed oil, GE-canola, are in most processed foods in the US. Consumers have little idea they are there, little means to distinguish them from other items, and they were never tested for safety for human consumption. Yet studies in animals repeatedly show severe organ damage and infertility/sterility.
