Astragalus has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries to support and enhance the immune system. Those who suffer from the many issues caused from ether direct or indirect contact with Agent Orange should include Astragalus in their daily repertoire. This herb has been used for many chronic medical problems dealing with the immune system as well as chronic hepatitis and cancer. It has also been used to treat common colds, upper respiratory infections, numbness, nephritis (kidney inflammation), proteinuria, prostatic hypertrophy, psoriasis, nephropathy and influenza.
The root of Astragalus is usually dried and traditionally made into a tea. The root can also be used in cooking though it is very fibrous and not usually eaten the healing properties are transferred to the broth through cooking kinda like using a bay leaf for flavoring. It is also sometimes ground up into a poultice and used on the skin for wounds. This is a very versatile herb and should be a part of every ones personal regiment.
Astragalus helps protect the body from diseases such as cancer and diabetes. It contains antioxidants, which protect cells against damage caused by free radicals, byproducts of cellular energy. Astragalus is used to protect and support the immune system, for preventing colds and
upper respiratory infections, to lower blood pressure, to treat diabetes, to protect the liver, and to protect the kidneys.
Astragalus is used for cancer because the polysaccharides and flavonoids found in Astragalus root are effective cancer inhibitors and may reduce the size and aggressiveness of prostate cancer tumors, according to the Metropolitan State College of Denver. Astragalus may also improve survival in people who have cancer by supporting the body's immune system and cell-destroying ability. Astragalus is commonly applied to enhance the effectiveness of platinum-based chemotherapy drugs, particularly those are used in treating prostate cancer.
