First, let's help military families feel they are part of our communities, not a group apart.
Civilians have a fundamental role to play in the tragedy of military suicides. We have to move from honoring troops in the abstract to offering real care and opportunity to individuals. For decades, America's troops have exemplified the meaning of courage worldwide. Now they define America's conscience.
The rest of us should feel we have done all we can to secure their emotional health. If we haven't, we simply need to work harder. They fought to keep us safe. Now let's fight for them.
