Disabled Vietnam veteran walking across Colorado for his brethren

The pain Ben Cordova feels as a result of his Type II diabetes and neuropathy won't keep him from walking hundreds, and eventually thousands, of miles to serve his fellow veterans.

After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, Cordova struggled to obtain Veterans Administration disability benefits for health problems he developed after exposed to the toxic herbicide Agent Orange used during the Vietnam War.

The VA was, and still is, backlogged with an overwhelming number of monthly claims, Cordova said, and the claims process can be lengthy and confusing.

That's why the 59-year-old from Commerce City started The Ben Cordova Foundation, a nonprofit that raises money to provide free legal assistance to veterans of any age. The organization also offers educational materials on employment, counseling and medical treatment, among others.
