The story is also a reminder of the importance and power of good journalism, demonstrating how the oft-maligned media can make a positive difference in society by exposing wrongdoing and incompetence. The citizens, and those of us in the media, need occasional reminding that what we do in this business can still have an impact. This story reaffirms our commitment.
But sadly, the outcome of this situation reminds us of how the system works for some and not for others.
Veterans advocates and our representatives in Congress need to use the example of this series and of this outcome to continue to push for a major overhaul of VA practices and policies.
