Agent Orange ruling due from government

Agent Orange ruling due from government

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- A U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs official said no cost estimates
were available regarding an impending decision regarding diseases tied to Agent Orange.

Veterans Affairs press secretary Katie Roberts said such estimates will be available after the federal department officially rules whether three diseases suffered by U.S. veterans of the Vietnam War are linked to Agent Orange, the Newport News (Va.) Daily Press said Sunday.

The ruling regarding Parkinson's disease, B cell leukemia and ischemic heart disease is expected from Veterans Affairs later this year.

If the department rules those diseases are tied to the military's use of the chemical agent during the Vietnam War, veterans suffering from those afflictions would be eligible for disability compensation and VA medical care.

Veterans with any of those diseases would not be able to receive such compensation and care if evidence is found their affliction is due to a non-service cause, the Daily Press reported.
